The Egyptian human rights coalition on cop 27
Press Release
As the world approaches the kick starts of COP27 activities, which will take place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2022, The Committee for Justice – CFJ, on behalf of The Egyptian Human Rights Coalition on COP27, is announcing the launching of the Coalition’s website
The website aims to use the unique opportunity of holding COP27 in Egypt to leverage the mobilization of the global climate movement. In addition to building cross-movements solidarity with the international human rights and the environmental movement.
Hosting COP27 in Egypt comes under tightening repression and challenging restrictions over the Egyptian civil society. The Egyptian government continues to utilize arbitrary detention as a punishment against civil movements and civil society leaders for exercising the right to freedom of association, assembly, and expression.
Launching the website represents the starting point of the Coalition activities, which include publishing an open petition developed by the Egyptian human rights movement. The petition highlights the importance of the right to freedom of expression and independent reporting to ensure meaningful participation in COP27. And demand ending the prosecutions of civil society activists and organizations and guarantee space for civil society, including human rights defenders, to work without fear of intimidation, harassment, arrest, detention, or any other form of reprisal. Holding the United Nations Most vital summit in Egypt requires addressing grave human rights violations and restrictions on civil society.
“With all eyes on Egypt, COP27 is a chance to voice the Egyptian government’s disrespect for human rights and increasing restrictions on civil society. Egypt must uphold the rights to freedom of assembly, association, and expression at COP27 for all, including Egyptian civil society activists and journalists currently facing harsh repression for exercising these human rights.” Said Yasmin Omar – UN and Regional Mechanisms Manager at the Committee for Justice (CFJ).
