Ahmed Abdelsattar Amasha
Veterinarian, Trade Unionist, Environmental activist, Founder of the League for Families of the Disappeared, Founding member of the Kefaya movement, and Founder of The Arab Association for Environment and Sustainable Development.
Arrest: Dr. Amasha was arrested on June 17, 2020, and disappeared for 25 days before reappearing before the prosecutor on July 12. He was then taken to an unknown location, and remained missing until December 7, 2020, when he was seen by his lawyer in Tora prison.

- Charges:Joining a terrorist group, in case 1360/2019. His case was referred to trial at the end of August, with the first hearing scheduled for September 24.
- Amasha was first arrested on March 10, 2017, and forcibly disappeared for 3 weeks before being remanded to pretrial detention under case 316/2017. He was then released on October 4, 2019, then rearrested again less than a week later.
- UN special rapporteurs found that violations against him “seem to constitute acts of reprisals against Dr. Amasha for documenting cases of enforced disappearances for the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations”.
- The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that his detention was arbitrary (Opinion 78/2017).
Detention conditions
Dr. Amasha suffers from stomach ulcers, herniated discs, retinal detachment, and inflammation of the optic nerve. His family discovered that torture he endured during his enforced forced disappearance resulted in broken ribs and other injuries. Abuses he’s endured include sexual assault, electrocution, threats to rape his wife, and physical abuse while blindfolded.
